Knee Resurfacing in Clearwater, Florida
Minimally Invasive Knee Surgery
Knee Resurfacing, also known as Partial Knee Replacement (PKR), is a minimally invasive procedure performed for isolated cartilage compartments in the knee. With only the damaged surfaces replaced, patients can retain their healthy areas and avoid total knee replacement. These procedures can be done in an outpatient setting and have a quicker recovery and return to function. Resurfacing is a great option for patient’s whose problems lie in only one or two of the compartments of the knee.
Why Would Someone Need Knee Resurfacing?
Cartilage in the knee wears down over time. We need cartilage in the knees so that the bones in the joint aren’t rubbing against each other. Most people who experience knee problems will start feeling the effects around age 50. Arthritis can also cause or be caused by cartilage loss.
Cartilage loss can cause the following symptoms:
- Pain that persists over time
- Pain occurs when sitting for long periods
- It can be difficult to move the knee joint
- Swelling occurs in the knee
- There is a grating feeling in the knee when doing activities
- Pain that doesn’t improve with over-the-counter pain medication
- Pain that prevents you from sleeping
Knee resurfacing is the less invasive option to total knee replacement. It is generally recommended for patients who have chronic knee pain that isn’t debilitating enough to warrant a complete replacement. During the procedure, the damaged portions of the knee are resurfaced so that the joint can once again smoothly glide through the body when moved.
This is a nominally invasive procedure that is usually performed on an outpatient basis, meaning you can go home the same day of your operation.
